[1] This song has several puns or double meanings that just don't work in English. As a suffix, "-los" is the same as "-less" in English. As an adjective, "los" is more like "off" or "loose". As a command, "Los!" means "go".

[2] Another pun. The German saying "sang- und klanglos" means "simply", "unnoticed", or "without any ado or fuss". It comes from the fact that there is no singing (Gesang) or bell ringing (Glockenklang) at simple funerals. The word "sanglos" is only used in this phrase in German. The lyrics mean that they are one part, yet not the other, and therefore are not going to simply be unnoticed.

[3] And another. Because it is written and said apart, it can be seen as "Es wurde Zeit. Los!" ("It was time, go!") as well as "Es wurde Zeitlos" (It became timeless").

[4] "Sie sind Gott. Los!" means "They are God. Go!" while "Sie sind gottlos" is "they are godless".

Been a long time

Yep, I haven't posted anything on my blog for a long time. I guess I just haven't had that much to say. I guess I will talk about my Cobalt Blue tarantula named Der Blaue Reiter (after the German Expressionist Art Movement). I call him Blaue for short. At the end of June, I noticed that Blaue did not come out of its burrow at night. Normally, he was like clockwork, once it is all dark in the room, Blaue would be out. Then one night, no Blaue. So I figured it may have retreated to go molt. Which did concern me, since if it molted in a restricted area, that could be bad. However, I do know that Cobalt Blue tarantulas are very reclusive. So 3 weeks go by, no Blaue. I started getting worried. It seemed like its burrow was all filled up with dirt, so I worried if it got caved in. So I checked on Blaue, he was alive. Probably thinking something like, "Leave me alone, you crazy woman!" So I left it alone for another 3 weeks. In that time, Blaue sealed up the hole I left with silk. I was getting concerned again, so last Tuesday, I checked on Blaue. He had molted. His exoskeleton was almost degraded into the soil, so I figure the molting must have happened a good while ago. Blaue was there, probably saying again "Woman, I said leave me alone!" So now, I have noticed that Blaue is again sealing up the hole with silk. I guess he just wants to be in there, with no outlet, and there's nothing I can do. I hope that when he is ready to come out, he can cut through his silk and the dirt. I guess I just worry that he may be too weak and will have a difficult time coming out. I hope not. Not much I can do. Tarantulas do what they want to do... We'll see. I hope he comes out soon. I keep his water dish filled to help keep the humidity stable and hopefully when he's ready to come out, I'm sure he'll be thirsty as well as hungry.

Mr. Squishy Pants, my tarantula, won't eat!

Since the day we've gotten Mr. Squishy, he hasn't had anything to eat. I've given him crickets, but he just lets them walk right under him, and he doesn't even move. I knew beforehand not to be concerned too much, but after several weeks have gone by, I've gotten more worried. So I did a little internet research.

I knew it was common for tarantulas to have fasting periods, but I recently found out that these fasting periods may even last several months, depending on the species. The record for a fasting tarantula is even two and a half years! So I guess I don't have that much to be worried about. Here's a few reasons why I believe Mr. Squishy Pants is not eating:

1. New habitat. It can take a tarantula several weeks to become comfortable in his new habitat. Any kind of stress can cause a tarantula to fast.

2. He will be molting soon. Tarantulas will often not eat before they are about to molt. Mr. Squishy Pants does have a bald spot on his abdomen, which is a sign he will molt soon. A tarantula will flick off the hairs of his abdomen before molting in preparation. I compared pictures of his bald spot to his current look. I do see a decrease in hairs and a change in color. His bald spot looks like a light creamy color, whereas before, it was more of a reddish-brown color like the rest of his body. I read that his bald spot will change to a dark color, almost black, right before molting. After molting, his abdomen hairs will grow back.

3. He could be sick. We did catch him in the wild. Who knows how he's feeling and what he's been through. He does have a weird black thing sticking out from his abdomen on the left side. He seems to be moving around fine, so I figure he's okay. I hope.

4. Change in season. Some tarantulas change their eating habits with relation to the seasons. I don't think this is the case with Mr. Squishy Pants, but I thought I'd mention it.

Overall, as long as his abdomen is a nice shape and not shriveled up, he's still healthy. He'll be molting soon, and I hope when he does the black thing sticking out from his abdomen will go away. New home and a bald spot are the recipe for a great fast.

My mother has recently invited me to Ancestry.com, where she has already built our family tree up to over 600 people so far! Going back through the family line, I have just discovered that I am the Great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Chief Blacksnake, also known as Chainbreaker or Governor Blacksnake. I have found two books on Chief Blacksnake, "Chainbreaker's War: A Seneca Chief Remembers the American Revolution" by Jeanne Winston Adler and "Chainbreaker: The Revolutionary War Memoirs of Governor Blacksnake as told to Benjamin Williams" by Thomas S. Abler. I'm going to have to buy these books to learn more!

So we acquired another pet! Mr. Handsome almost ran over Mr. Squishy Pants with his truck this morning. He captured him in a box. He ran by home to show Mr. Pierce and I before Pierce went to school, and we all decided to keep the male tarantula. I wanted to name him Lucky, since he's lucky to be alive. Pierce and Mr. Handsome want to name him Squishy, since that's what he would've been if Mr. Handsome ran him over. We put him in a fish bowl temporarily while we all went to work/school. Then on my way home from work, I bought him a habitat (with a lockable lid, kitty safe) and some live crickets.

Male tarantulas have a smaller abdomen than females, so that's how I've deciphered that it must be a male. Pierce knows it's not the kind of pet that we can handle, since it's fuzzy hairs will sting us, but it's certainly cool to look at! These hairs can cause itching and burning. We can't put him in direct sunlight, so we have him on the NE wall of Pierce's room, which will be perfect. We can keep Pierce's door closed while no one is home for safety (who knows with our cats, Sonic was very amused by the crickets...)

This desert tarantula is known as Aphonopelma Chalcodes, it comes in a variety of colors with ours being a reddish brown. This was the typical time for us to find a tarantula. After the Tucson monsoons, male tarantulas go out to find a female. Unfortunately, Mr. Squishy Pants is going to remain a bachelor. They are docile creatures and need a lot of provoking if you want it to bite, but who would do that? Males have a short life span, a year or so after sexual maturity (taking 8 to 12 years to reach maturity). Females can live up to 25 years!*

Mature tarantulas will molt occasionally, shedding their entire exoskeleton and growing a new one, like a snake sheds its skin.* It will lay on its back, and split its own skin open, and escape it with a new, softer, shell. This is a delicate time for the tarantula, and it should not be disturbed. When it frees itself, it will take several hours to several days to dry out and harden.#

Perhaps the oddest tarantula habit is "hair spitting," a defensive move in which a threatened tarantula hoists up its abdomen and uses its legs to flick its tiny body hairs at a perceived danger source. These hairs can irritate the eyes and nose of a curious potential predator like a small mammal.*

Say cheese, Mr. Squishy.

The molting behavior is referenced in a well-known Zuni legend about the tarantula, who takes the role of the "trickster" in several Zuni stories. This story features Tarantula, who at the time was the only one of his kind on earth, and was large as a man. He managed to trick a Zuni boy named Swift-Runner out of his elaborate ceremonial costume, exchanging it for his own woolly leggings and dirty grey cape. Swift-Runner and his village tried every means necessary, including employing several crafty birds of prey, to con Tarantula out of his den and take back the costume, but nothing worked. Finally they appealed to the grandmother of the war gods, who crafted decoy deer out of stone, which lured Tarantula out with their lifelike appearance, then fell on him with their inanimate weight when he tried to take them. The Zuni overtook Tarantula and threw him onto the fire, where he burst into a million tiny versions of himself, populating the world with tarantulas as we know them.*

The tarantula is also featured in the lore of other Native Southwest people, but generally has a more benevolent aspect, and is often part of creation itself. The Apaches tell of Tarantula as one of the first beings formed by the Creator, giving him a role in the creation of the earth itself. To the Navajo, Spider Woman, who lives atop Spider Rock, a tall spire-like formation in Canyon de Chelly, was instrumental in helping humans transition into this "fourth world," offering them protection, creating order in the new world, and, not insignificantly, teaching the Navajo the art of weaving.*

"We shall fight," he said and then burned the snake until it was dead. He thought this was a great jest and so, whenever he found a snake, he would do the same thing.

One day another man from his village was walking through the forest when he heard a strange sound. It was louder than the wind hissing through the tops of tall pine trees. He crept closer to see. There, in a great clearing, were many snakes. They were gathered for a war council and as he listened in fright he heard them say:

"We shall now fight with them. Djisdaah has challenged us and we shall go to war. In four days we shall go to their village and fight them."

The man crept away and then ran as fast as he could to his village to tell what he had heard and seen. The chief sent other men to see if the report was true. They returned in great fright.

"Ahhhh," they said, "it is so. The snakes are all gathering to have a war."

The chief of the village could see that he had no choice. "We must fight," he said and ordered the people of the village to make preparations for the battle. They cut mountains of wood and stacked it in long piles all around the village. They built rows of stakes close together to keep the snakes out. When the fourth day came, the chief ordered that the piles of wood be set on fire. Just as he did so they heard a great noise, like a great wind in the trees. It was the noise of the snakes, hissing as they came to the village to do battle.

Usually a snake will not go near a fire, but these snakes were determined to have their revenge. They went straight into the flames. Many of them died, but the living snakes crawled over the bodies of the dead ones and continued to move forward until they reached the second row of stakes.

Once again, the chief ordered that the piles of wood in the second row of defense be set on fire. But the snakes crawled straight into the flames, hissing their war songs, and the living crawled over the bodies of the dead. It was a terrible sight. They reached the second row of stakes and, even though the people fought bravely, it was no use. The snakes were more numerous than fallen leaves and they could not be stopped. Soon they forced their way past the last row of stakes and the people of the village were fighting for their lives. The first man to be killed was Djisdaah, the one who had challenged the snakes to battle.

It was now clear that they could never win this battle. The chief of the village shouted to the snakes who had reached the edge of the village: "Hear me, my brothers. We surrender to you.

We have done you a great wrong. Have mercy on us."

The snakes stopped where they were and there was a great silence.

The exhausted warriors looked at the great army of snakes and the snakes stared back at them. Then the earth trembled and cracked in front of the human beings. A great snake, a snake taller than the biggest pine tree, whose head was larger than a great long house, lifted himself out of the hole in the earth

"Hear me," he said. "I am the chief of all the snakes. We shall go and leave you in peace if you will agree to two things."

The chief looked at the great snake and nodded his head. "We will agree, Great Chief," he said.

"It is well," said the Chief of the Snakes. "These are the two things. First, you must always treat my people with respect. Secondly, as long as the world stands, you will never name another man Djisdaah."

And so it was agreed and so it is, even today.

Movie Review: The Last House on the Left (2009)

Before I saw the most recent version of "The Last House on the Left" I had seen the original from 1972. Of course, I already thought the 1972 version was good, for that era. The 2009 version had a slightly new twist, but same underlying story,and it's still good. For fellow parents out there, who don't mind a little violence and blood in a movie, I recommend it. It's a movie I would buy and own (out of reach of my kids until they're old enough, of course). The movie is about a gang that kills two teenage females. One of them escapes, however, and finds her way to her parents' vacation home. Ironically, the gang is staying there due to car trouble. Eventually the parents piece together the clues, and plot to kill the gang. Justice, revenge. Good movie.

So now I have 2 kids staying in Tucson! Rhiannon was supposed to catch a plane today, but last night she decided to stay here. So now I'm working on getting her registered in High School. She had dreaded going back to Texas all summer. She has 3 best friends here, and a lot more family (grandparents, cousins, uncles, etc.). Tears were shed. Snot was running. Hugs were shared. Time for more school shopping.

Been a long time

It's been a long time since I last posted something on my blog, so here's an update.

Health
In the last 2-1/2 weeks, I've lost 7 pounds. Previously, I was doing good at exercising with the Wii everyday, then I had a few-week-lapse. After hearing my friend Emily talk about eating healthy, exercising, etcetera, it gave me the motivation again. My main problem it eating. My breakfast and lunch meals were healthy already, but my dinner wasn't. Then there was the occasional desert. So now, I have weight watchers ice cream bars in the freezer for when I have a craving. That way, I don't feel so guilty, and I get to enjoy something sweet without it counteracting my exercising efforts. I've also discovered that starwberries with strawberry glaze (fat free) and angel food cake is nice desert as well. I've had this literally every night after dinner, and I've still manage to lose weight. So I'm watching fat grams and calories. My dinners are healthier with more vegetables, rice (my substitute for the evil-but-completely-desirable-pasta) poultry or fish, and fruit. I watch the "extras" I put into things like cheese or other types of dressings. I drink less pop and more water, juice, or tea. Overall, my meals have been healthier, and I found a way to still satisfy my sweet tooth.

With eating better, I find it easier to have the motivation to exercise. I feel better, so I can be more active. My dog Ringo enjoys going for a jog or a walk. When I go up and down my street, I calculate it to be .85 mile, so I figure that to be a pretty good jog. Some nights I exercise to the Wii only, sometimes Wii and a jog, or Wii and some walking, and I recently just bought DVD on belly dancing as a way to lose weight. It's more fun to change up the exercise every night. Plus, if I don't feel so well, then I figure I can at least go for a walk and do some sit-ups and I'll call it a night. Other nights, I've exercised for 1 to 1-1/2 hours. I figure if I at least get 20 minutes of exercising a night, that's good. I'm not taking any dieting pills. The only pills I take are my multi-vitamin, Effexor XR (helps me to stay sane), vitamin B-complex, L-carnitine (amino acid), and Gingko biloba (I figured it'll help my brain function at work). The extras are the L-carnatine and the B-complex. Both of these assist in metabolism and fat burn, the basic of losing weight.

I hope that I stick to better eating and exercising this time around. Gotta go for the lifestyle change.

Family
I can't wait for the kids to come home! Third Saturday in June, Mr. Handsome is going to get the kids! They have never seen Ringo before, so that'll be different for them. I also have to get Pierce registered for school, as he will be staying with us this year. Rhiannon plans on staying with us the year after, along with Piece. I'm very excited and I miss my kids. I think it's harder being a step-mother sometimes, because I may have the re-build the bonds again. Of course, they're older and they remember me, but they'll have to re-adjust to Tucson again, and everything that it includes ...like me and Mr. Handsome. I find that our lifestyle and habits at home are much different from their mother's, so there always seems to be an adjustment period. I want to get them both in an activity this summer, like music lessons or martial arts classes. I'd like to see what the kids want to do, and how much it all costs. I hate seeing them bored at home during the summmer...

Work
Work is going great. I'm always busy, and I have tons of projects. I sometimes work on them a little bit at home too, as it takes some of the load off my shoulders. Overall, I love my job.

Past-time Activites
Most evenings I read. I'm on "The Witching Hour" by Anne Rice. I've read the first four books of the vampire chronicles. Now, I'm reading the witch chronicles, then I'll return to reading the rest of the vampire chronicles. I'm reading them in the order that Anne Rice wrote them, judging by the copyright date, as my friend Dana told me there is some overlap with the two series. I find these books very interesting, epic, and they keep me glued. I find that I want to get my exercising in as early as possible after eating dinner so that I have more time for reading.

Sunday is soccer practice day. My girlfriends and I get together on Sundays for what we like to call "soccer practice." The name is inspired by one of the games on Nintendo Wii Fit. Basically, we all take turns picking out a movie for the day. This upcoming Sunday is Megan's turn to pick out a movie. My week will come around again four weeks. We all watch the movie. Then we play video or board games, take the dogs for a walk, etc. We keep a journal with our reviews and comments on the movie, and anything else we did that day. Basically, we just have a good time. So far I have subjected my friends to "Army of Darkness" starring the fabulous and one of my favorite actors, Bruce Campbell. Then I chose "Interview with a Vampire" last Sunday. Although the horror genre is my favorite, I am unfortunately restricted in my choices, as all of my girlfriends dislike movies that are "too scary" ...wimps ...anyway.

Pets
Ringo and Sonic get along very well. They each smell each other's butts equally. It's funny seeing Sonic stretch while standing on her hind legs to sniff Ringo's butt. Minx hates Ringo with a passion. She growls, hisses, and if he gets too close, she'll scratch him. Hopefully, in time, that will pass. Onyx gives him about 5 seconds before she hisses, which is wonderful compared to running away every time like she did before. I don't have to separate Ringo from the cats anymore. Ringo is just so excited when he sees the cats, he runs over and just wants to play. Sonic stays still and doesn't seem to care much. Minx poofs out her hair, stands on her tippy toes, arches her back, growls profanities, and has her claws ready for striking. Onyx gives it about 5 seconds, then proceeds to the next hiding area. Overall, the dog and cats are living together in peace ...somewhat.

Conclusion
Life is swell.

I've been spending some time on Facebook, taking silly quizzes.
Also gardening this past weekend and reading the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. I'm on the second book, The Vampire Lestat. Before I started this series, I had just finished House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Very interesting book, avant garde type. Not your typical read. I definitely recommend it.
I planted a Mesquite tree in my backyard and Cassia bush as well. Digging holes in AZ is not like good ol' PA rich, clay soil. You have to water the hole every 3 inches or so to soften the soil. The ground is very compact and hard here. The next day, my back thighs were actually sore.
